Specifically I have noticed that the response we all were taught, when someone says, \u201cThank you,\u201d has fallen into disuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Most of us were taught \u201cPlease,\u201d \u201cThank you,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re Welcome,\u201d as strictly as ABCs and 1-2-3s. I do a little private survey each year to see how \u201cYou\u2019re Welcome\u201d is becoming an extinct phrase. Try it yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Over the past week, in shops, post offices, and banks, I tracked 24 times I said \u201cThank you.\u201d I received only one \u201cYou\u2019re Welcome\u201d in reply. Among the substitutes were \u201cYup,\u201d \u201cOK,\u201d \u201cNo problem,\u201d \u201cHey, no prob,\u201d \u201cYou got it,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cSure thing,\u201d and \u201cYou bet.\u201d The most common reply was \u201cThank YOU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">I always cast broader attention across the cultural landscape, to radio and television. Of 17 examples I recorded, I heard one person, correspondent Malini Wilkes, of FOX News, say \u201cYou\u2019re Welcome.\u201d The speakers ranged from major news figures on NPR to callers and hosts on sports radio WFAN in New York. Also celebrities from my notebook since last Thanksgiving (once you notice this, it\u2019s hard to stop noticing):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">In July, President Obama was interviewed by Yonit Levi of Israeli TV:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u00a0\u00a0 Q: President Barack Obama, shalom, and thank you so much for talking with us today.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President: Thank you. Thank you very much.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">And at the end of this interview:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em> Q: Thank you so much, Mr. President.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President: Thank you. I enjoyed it. Take care.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Things were not different when, a few months earlier, Obama was interviewed by the pan-Arabic media site Al Arabiya:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>Q: Mr. President, thank you for this opportunity, we really appreciate it<\/em><\/span><\/ul>\n<ul><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>The President: Thank you so much.<\/em><\/span><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">And at the end of the interview, it sounded like Alphonse and Gaston had entered the studio:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>Q: Sir, I really appreciate it.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>The President: Thank you so much.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>Q: Thanks a lot.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>The President: I appreciate it.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>Q: Thank you.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>The President: Thank you<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Pat Boone was a guest on &#8220;The Interview&#8221; program from NHK television in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em> Q: Pat, thanks for joining us today.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pat Boone: I enjoyed it.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">One of the Republican \u201cyoung guns\u201d in the House turned the tables in the conclusion of an CNBC interview; he thanked his host, Joe Kernan, first:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em> Rep. Tim Ryan: <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #333333; font-size: medium;\"><em>Thank you.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #333333; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Interviewer: OK, Congressman.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Laura Bush, flogging her book, not only abandoned the traditional reply, but the first person pronoun, once a no-no for a school librarian:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Maria Bartiromo: Mrs. Bush, thank you so much for your time today.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mrs Bush: Thanks.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bartiromo: Thank you for the service for our country, of course.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mrs Bush: Thanks a lot. When she is welcomed, she thanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Chris Wallace, FOX News Host: Governor Palin, welcome to Fox News Sunday.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sarah Palin: Thank you so much.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">The origins of \u201cThank you\u201d and \u201cYou are welcome\u201d are interesting. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Proto Indo-European group spoke a cognate of \u201cthanks,\u201d meaning \u201cGood thoughts, gratitude,\u201d the same root as \u201cthink.\u201d Old Frisians said \u201cthankia,\u201d Germans say, \u201cDanke.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">The roots of \u201cwelcome\u201d are not, strictly, \u201cwell\u201d and \u201ccome,\u201d but \u201cwilled\u201d as in desired; and \u201cCuma,\u201d meaning guest \u2013 so, roughly, \u201c I want to extend my hospitality to you.\u201d Oddly, \u201cYou\u2019re welcome\u201d as a formulaic response to \u201cThank you\u201d only became standard around 1907. So if this social convention is fading from the scene, we are not losing an old tradition, but a relatively brief convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">What is the lesson to be drawn this week? Is there a spiritual aspect to this discussion? Thank you for asking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Whether we recall biblical ceremonies, Pilgrims\u2019 dinners, or presidential proclamations, we summon feelings of gratitude to a gracious God, so as to be mindful of His bountiful gifts at Thanksgiving time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Too often, however, we forget that God, Creator of the universe and Master of the Harvest, thanks us, too. There are many cases in the Bible where we see this \u2013 \u201cWell done, thou good and faithful servant\u201d is the most familiar. He knows what our service means, and what it costs, and He honors our faith and our witness. This is humbling (He exercises grace, lest no man shall boast) \u2013 but edifying, because it reminds us that Thanksgiving is a time of blessed sweet communion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">When God says, \u201cThank you,\u201d let us not reply with \u201cNo prob,\u201d or \u201cOK.\u201d Be intentional with, \u201cNo, thank YOU,\u201d or \u201cI want to extend my hospitality to you.\u201d And how appropriate, how symbolic, if we have room to set an empty chair at our Thanskgiving dinners, representing the fact that we can commune with the God who offers, and receives, Thanks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Here is a brief song and video that will affect you profoundly &#8212; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Click:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch_popup?v=UFrdJ2V3r7Y&amp;playnext=1&amp;list=PL94325E7A97ACA690&amp;index=67\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff; font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thank You For Giving To the Lord<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\"><em>I also give thanks for creative people whose faith has touched us in the past. There are cases where songwriters and singers \u2013 even preachers \u2013 alter their Christian views and sometimes deny their Christian vows; yet the works produced during their periods of faith still proclaim the truth. Moreover, we cannot judge, especially when their testimony was strong and they, perhaps, wrestle now with spiritual matters. For instance, if Mel Gibson has disappointed believers with actions in his private life since \u201cPassion of the Christ,\u201d few would deny the truth and power of that film.
